Introduction

As part of the Digital Technology module for my Masters, we were set a team assignment by the BBC to deepen the experience of being a football fan using two or more different platforms.

Using Design Thinking principles and techniques our team created a next level, user-generated content social space to bring together fans before, during and after the game.

We aimed our app at a younger audience that are not currently interacting with BBC content.

Initial Brainstorming - the Flick-It Gesture

As the team worked remotely, brainstorming and research was done and shared using Miro, a cloud based whiteboarding tool.

I also developed a simple prototype to outline a “flick-it” gesture to show how users could navigate through content in a fun, football inspired manner. Using a Subuteo style ‘flick’ to “like” content by shooting into a goal at the top of a screen”, or ‘passing the ball’ to the left or right, users can share content with friends and groups in a new and fun way.

The prototype can be seen here.

Tone of Voice

Given the BBC’s pedigree, vast library of football content, and looking to the more modern tone as seen in BBC Sounds and BBC Three, we are aimed our app to appeal to a younger “Youtube” generation.

Mapping out the Football Week

We also looked at the current BBC broadcast schedule and mapped out how content could be pushed to users depending on the features and fixtures and also how users could share content depending on their location to be used in new comms formats such as digital out of home and at the stadium itself.

The Flick-it Ecosystem

We created an ecosystem to show how content could be used and shared across platforms, as well as how we might approach the challenge of moderating user generated content across a BBC channel.

using Prezi to help tell our story

To capture the spirit and excitement of football, we chose to use Prezi to tell the story of our new product.

By setting the details out onto a football pitch design and incorporating soccer style tactics, we succesfully brought the concept to life using simple but effective animation.
